Operational task

A modern mobile platform can encounter threats outside the crew’s optical field of view. External protective structures, terrain, vegetation, smoke, darkness, and platform geometry further limit observation.

Capability

Passive Acoustic Situational Awareness adds an independent perception channel. Passive acoustic sensors can provide data on acoustically detectable events without active emission and without direct optical visibility; the ability to determine direction depends on the specific sensor configuration.

Integration logic

Acoustic detection should not remain an isolated alert. It can become an input to a multi-sensor architecture: event data and, where available, direction are passed through the Integration Interface for confirmation by adjacent sensors, crew display, and further processing in platform systems.

Threat classes and application

  • unmanned aerial vehicles;
  • small arms;
  • other threats with an identifiable acoustic signature.

The specific sensor set, classification logic, and subsequent response are defined by the operational task, platform, and confirmed interfaces of adjacent systems.

On the platform

Such a sensor channel may be relevant for APCs, IFVs, tactical vehicles, unmanned ground platforms, and protected vehicles with limited direct visibility. The Sensor Layer, power, network, mounts, cable routes, crew workstations, and service access must be considered together with the vehicle-platform architecture.

DVE (Driver Vision Enhancement) supports driver movement and visibility. Acoustic sensing does not replace DVE and does not combine DVE with C-UAS into one capability: it complements optical channels with event and direction data. Video Distribution Architecture, displays, and integration infrastructure can form part of the wider situational-awareness architecture.

Where external protective structures limit physical visibility, non-optical sensor channels can complement EO/IR and DVE systems.

OTU role

OTU is a Defense Systems Integrator. Within a project, the integration architecture can include sensors, displays, video, processing, interfaces, power, platform adaptation, and crew HMI according to the operational task. It is not an offer of a single microphone or standalone detector.
